Defrosting a Small Freezer
Small freezers are great for storing perishable goods that you don’t plan to use right away. Because of their small size, they are perfect for small kitchens that have limited space. Most refrigerator models come with freezers, but these are usually too large to fit in smaller kitchens. So if you have a small kitchen, the solution would be to buy a small refrigerator (one that does not have a freezer) and a small freezer separately.
Some people believe that because of the compact size of small freezers, they don’t need to defrost it as often as the large freezers on standard refrigerators. Preparing Your Freezer for Defrosting
First, set your freezer to the coldest temperature setting the night before you plan to defrost it. Doing so will freeze the foods thoroughly and keep it fresh during the defrosting process. Once you are ready to start defrosting your freezer, unplug it from its power source. Get some boxes and fill it with about three layers of newspaper. Place your frozen food inside the boxes, close the lids and then place the boxes in a cool area of your home.
Defrosting Your Freezer
Next, you’ll need to remove the drain plug that is located on the bottom of your small freezer. Get a shallow pan and slide it beneath the drain. The pan will catch all of the water escaping from the freezer. Some freezer models don’t have drains, so you may have to catch the escaping water using towels. As your freezer defrosts, moisture will form on the bottom of the freezer. Place a towel in the bottom of your freezer to absorb the moisture created by the melting ice.
Cleaning Your Freezer
To speed up the defrosting process, get a plastic scraper and gently remove the melting ice that are on the sides of your freezer. If the ice seems to be still frozen and stuck on the sizes of your freezer, don’t remove it forcefully to avoid damaging your freezer. Avoid using metal objects to remove the melting ice from the freezer because this may also damage your freezer. After all of the ice melts, get a basin and fill it with 1 tbsp. baking soda and 1 qt. tepid water. Soak a soft cloth with the solution and use the cloth to wipe out the freezer’s interior.
After cleaning your small freezer, all you have to do is to plug it back to its power source and let it run for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, you can place all of your frozen food back inside. It is recommended that you defrost your freezer once or twice a year. If you don’t defrost your freezer, ice and condensation will build up and take over the interior of your freezer, limiting the amount of space you have for food storage.
